Derric blinked, readjusting to reality as the torch-lit cave materialized around him. Everyone watched him with a mixture of curiosity and fear.
“Where did you just go?” Sarah asked from behind him, making him jump.
“When did you get in here?”
“I’ve been here for ten minutes. You were glowing.”
Derric’s mouth opened, and he stumbled over his words. “I…wait what?”
“It was pretty small, but we could definitely tell. It was like you were made of light.” Humphrey shifted and didn’t meet Derric’s gaze.
Exhaling, Derric shoved this information aside and focused on Briskelle. He could feel the magic tethered to him, more powerful than he’d been alone. Shifting closer, he placed his hands on Briskelle, one on her waist and the other up by her neck. She flinched at his touch but made no effort to fight him.
Holding tight to the feeling coursing through him, Derric whispered the spell he’d used on Ygritte and Drusilla. Heat flooded his hands, tingling every nerve like a kitten’s rough tongue on a ticklish foot. Resisting the urge to pull away, Derric said the spell again, this time with more force. Three more times he chanted the incantation until the heat left his hands and the zinging nerves cooled.
As he chanted, he watched as a golden glow engulfed the burned parts of Briskelle’s body. New skin grew beneath his fingertips, stretching across and knitting together with the old. He lifted his hands, and Briskelle stirred. From his limited healing knowledge, he’d guess all that remained were the most minimal of burns. Much of her skin was still reddened and even blistered, but long gone was the charred black.
“Heavens and hells,” Humphrey whispered, his eyes as wide as saucers.
“Great One,” Drisk said, dipping into a bow. “Would you consider healing the others?”
Will you stay with me? Derric asked the magic bound to him. He felt a warm vibration of acceptance from both threads, and he nodded to Drisk.
